Getting started · Placket 1.0.0
Updating the theme
Placket gets updates for bug fixes, Shopify changes and small improvements. This page explains how updates reach your store and how to apply them safely.
Version numbers: the current version is 1.0.0. See the changelog for what changed in each version.
How updates arrive
There are two kinds of update.
Automatic update. If the update does not change or remove settings, sections or blocks, the new version replaces your installed version. You do not need to do anything. Automatic updates only work if you have not edited the theme code. Changes you make in the theme editor (settings, sections, content) are fine.
Update you apply yourself. If the update changes or removes settings, sections or blocks, or if you edited the theme code, a notice appears on Online Store > Themes. The new version is added to your theme library as an unpublished theme. Your live theme is not changed. You review the new theme, then publish it.
Updates for the Theme Store are spaced at least four weeks apart, to avoid update fatigue.
How to apply an update you review yourself
- Go to Online Store > Themes.
- Find the update notice for Placket and select Add to theme library (the label can differ slightly).
- Open the new unpublished theme and select Customize.
- Check your home page, a collection page, a product page, the cart, search and the pages you use. Do this on a phone too.
- Re-check your theme settings (Theme settings). If a setting was renamed or removed, set it again.
- Re-apply any custom code you added (Custom Liquid sections, Custom CSS and code edits).
- When you are happy, select Publish on the new theme.
- Keep your old theme for a few days in case you need to go back. Delete it later.
Before you update
- Duplicate your live theme. Go to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Duplicate. This is your backup.
- Write down code edits. Save any custom code in a document so you can add it again.
- Check the changelog for changes that affect your store.
Keep changes safe
- Prefer settings, sections and the Custom Liquid section over editing theme files. Code edits stop automatic updates.
- Avoid editing files in the
assets, sectionsandsnippetsfolders if you can. - If you must edit code, keep a note of what you changed and why.
If something looks wrong after an update
- Compare your live theme with the new one side by side.
- Check that the settings you changed on purpose were carried over.
- Look in the FAQ.
- If you think it is a bug, contact support. See the support policy and include the theme version.
Updates for Shopify changes
Shopify sometimes changes how the editor or the platform works. If a change affects the theme, we release an update and note it in the changelog. We also update this documentation.
