Translations and markets
Placket works with Shopify Markets. A market is a group of countries with its own currency and, optionally, its own languages and domain. The theme shows a country and language selector when your store sells in more than one country or language.
Languages
The theme includes translations of the storefront text (the words the theme shows, such as "Add to cart", "Sold out" and "Checkout") and of the theme editor (section, block and setting names) for English (US English, the default) and 16 more languages:
| Language | Code |
|---|---|
| French | fr |
| German | de |
| Spanish | es |
| Italian | it |
| Dutch | nl |
| Portuguese (Brazil) | pt-BR |
| Portuguese (Portugal) | pt-PT |
| Polish | pl |
| Japanese | ja |
| Chinese (Simplified) | zh-CN |
| Chinese (Traditional) | zh-TW |
| Korean | ko |
| Swedish | sv |
| Danish | da |
| Norwegian Bokmål | nb |
| Finnish | fi |
The theme editor shows its labels in the language of your staff account. The storefront shows the theme text in the language the shopper picks.
To sell in one of these languages:
- In your admin, go to Settings > Languages.
- Select Add language and pick a language.
- Select Publish next to the language, or publish it later in a market.
- Open the free Translate & Adapt app (or a translation app of your choice) to translate your own content.
The theme's built-in words already come in these languages, so you do not need to translate "Add to cart" and similar words yourself. For a language that is not in the table, Shopify shows the English words until you change them (see below).
You still need to translate your own content. The built-in translations do not cover products, collections, pages, blog posts, menus, policies, or the text you typed into sections (headings, buttons, announcements, captions and similar). Translate these in Translate & Adapt (the Theme area covers section text), or in the translation app you use. Untranslated content stays in your main language.
To edit a language, for example to change one of the theme's built-in words (such as "Add to cart" to "Add to bag"):
- Go to Online Store > Themes.
- Next to your theme, select the three dots, then Edit default theme content.
- Pick the language at the top, search for the text, change it and select Save.
The built-in translations were written with care but not tested by a native speaker of every language. If a word does not fit your brand, change it in Edit default theme content.
Countries and currencies
- In your admin, go to Settings > Markets.
- Add the countries you sell to and set their currencies.
- Check your shipping rates and taxes for each market.
Shopify converts prices to the shopper's currency. The theme shows prices in that currency in the product page, cards and cart.
- Show currency code in prices (Theme settings > Country selector and currency) adds the code after prices in the cart and on product pages, for example $98 USD.
- The Free shipping threshold is entered in your store currency. For shoppers in another currency, the cart converts it with Shopify's rate and rounds up to a whole unit.
The country and language selector
The selector is a button that opens a panel. Shoppers pick a country (and a language, where shown). The page reloads in the new country or language.
It can appear in three places:
| Place | Setting that turns it on |
|---|---|
| Header | Show country selector in the header and Show language selector in the Header section (Country selector group) |
| Mobile menu | Show country selector in the Header section (Mobile menu group) |
| Footer | Show country and language selector in the Footer section |
In the Header, the split layout with Show utility row above the main menu puts the selector on the left of the utility row.
The selector appears only when the store sells in more than one country, or has more than one language. Set the panel look in Theme settings > Country selector and currency:
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Show search field | On |
| Show flags | Off |
| Show currency code and symbol | On |
| Note under the list | Prices and checkout currency update when you change country. |
| Panel color scheme | Scheme 1 (Placket), Scheme 2 (Bodice) |
| Show currency code in prices | Off |
Tips
- Preview each language with the language picker in the theme editor top bar.
- Translate your menus, pages and policy text. Untranslated text stays in your main language.
- Check long words in narrow places (buttons, tabs and the cart drawer) in each language you publish. German, Finnish and Dutch words are often longer than English.
- A market with its own domain or subfolder can have its own languages. Set this in Settings > Markets > Domains.
